90s Music Classic Hip Hop Music Vintage

"Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)" is the first single released in 1990 by the NY based group C+C Music Factory from their debut studio album of the same name. The song was a smash hit reaching number 1 not only on the US Billboard Hot 100 for 2 weeks but also on the Top R&B Singles, Hot Dance Music/Club Play and the Hot Dance Music/Maxi Singles Sales. It also experienced international success reaching no.3 on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart and the UK Singles Chart.
Written by Cole & Civilles (aka the C & C), the song was originally written for another group they managed called Trilogy but when the group declined, C & C decided to use it to launch their music project. The rap featured in the song is performed by rapper Freedom Williams with the powerful vocal hook performed by the actual artist Martha Wash instead of Zelma Davis who appeared on the music video. Lets just say C & C pulled a Milli Vanilli on u 🤭
Martha Wash filed lawsuits against C & C for not getting credit on the song and was settled out of court with Sony requesting MTV add a disclaimer to the video crediting Wash for vocals and Davis for visualization. This win for Wash set an important precedent for artists’ right in Intellectual Property Law resulting in legislation created to mandate vocal credits on all albums and music videos.
There’s certainly been controversies associated with the group but there’s no denying Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now) helped solidify the post-disco, dance-pop era of the early 90s and is still to this day, the go-to anthem for sporting games, events, soundtracks and TV shows.
With that said, here’s C+C Music Factory with Gonna Make You Sweat to get you pumped for the weekend!
