"Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg" is the debut single from super girl group TLC released in 1992 from their debut album Ooooooohhh…On The TLC Tip. The group was formed in Atlanta GA consisting of members Tionne ‘T-Boz’ Watkins, Rozonda ‘Chilli’ Thomas and Lisa ‘Left-Eye’ Lopes (who sadly died in a car crash in Honduras in 2002), packaged under LaFace Records’ as the female response to the success of Bell Biv DeVoe.
The music video shows the girls singing, dancing and rapping in that distinctive classic 90s hip hop fashion of bright baggy clothes, big hat, sunglasses and oh, did we forget to mention, a condom being used as an eye patch! The song promoted the idea of sexually confident women but also took the time to promote safe sex, hence the condom eye patch worn by Lisa Lopes.
The song peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #2 on Billboards Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks, becoming their 1st single to reach the top 10 on both charts. Internationally, it also reached the top 20 in the UK Singles and was / still a popular song being played in old school R&B/Hip Hop clubs.
Two more singles would follow from the album with ‘What About Your Friends’ and a more mellow track ‘Baby, Baby, Baby’. Both did well on the charts and added to the credibility of the group as not just another one hit wonder but a force to be reckon with.
