The song samples the 1983 single Every Breath You Take by The Police and uses an interpolation of the tracks’ melody sung by Biggie’s widow Faith Evans. Experiencing commercial success, the single spent a whopping 11 weeks at No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and also reached No. 1 in 15 other countries including Australia, Denmark, New Zealand and Sweden to name a few.
The song also won a Grammy for the Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group with No Way Out winning the Grammy for Best Rap Album. Fun Fact: Ol’ Dirty Bastard from the Wu-Tang Clan didn’t agree with this decision and decided to get on stage to complain during the ceremony saying: “Puffy is good, but Wu-Tang is for the children”. Looks like Kanye got this idea from Ol’ Dirty when he hijacked Taylor Swift VMA acceptance speech!
I’ll Be Missing You may have suffered legal complications for sampling other artists music without permission but there is no denying, it was one of Puffy’s best work in his career not only with paying tribute to his fallen brother BIG, but also what would define him as a power house in the music industry, not only as an artist but a business mogul as well.
