Before taking on the world as a solo artist, Hill was known for being in The Fugees comprising of Pras and Wyclef Jean. The group gained commercial success with the release of Killing Me Softly from their 2nd album The Score and continued success with other chart hits like Fu-Gee-La and Ready or Not.
Doo Wop (That Thing) debuted at no.1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and was Hill’s 1st and only number one to date. The song was named the best single of the year by Rolling Stone and won the Best Female RnB Vocal Performance and Best RnB Song category in the 1999 Grammy Awards.
The music video filmed in Manhattan’s Washington Heights in NYC shows two Hills singing side by side at a block party with one side of the split screen showing a 1967 Hill dressed in full retro-styled striped attire and the opposite side, a 1998 Hill paying homage to hip hop culture with a classic white dress topped with a denim shirt. The award winning video is a testamant to what modern day soul music is all about and showcases a strong female presence leading the charge of bringing neo soul music back to our airwaves.
With other credentials to her name - singer, songwriter, rapper, record producer and actress, Hill is often regarded as one of the greatest rapper of all time as well as being one of the most influential singers of her generation.
