Family Affair is a song by the one and only Mary J Blige released from her 5th studio album No More Drama in 2001. The single topped the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks straight knocking off the 10 week lockup of the top two positions on the chart by Alicia Keys with Falliin’ and Jennifer Lopez with I’m Real (Murder Remix). This song was Blige’s 1st and only Hot 100 number one single and her 1st top ten single in 5 years.
Considered the “Queen of Hip-Hop Soul”, Blige is credited with influencing the musical marriage of hip hop and RnB. Her work over time has influenced several major recording artists to the likes of Beyonce, Adele, Taylor Smith and Keyshia Cole to name a few.
Family Affair was listed as the 79th biggest single on the Billboard Hot 100 All-Time Top Songs in 2008 while at the end of 2009, the song was named the 12th most successful song from 2000-2009 on the Billboard Hot 100 Songs of the Decade. Quite an achievement.
With 13 albums to her name and a career spanning over close to 3 decades, it’s fitting that Blige was ranked on VH1’s list of the 100 Greatest Artist of All Time in 2010 and one of the 50 Most Influential RnB Singers by Essence.
