28 years ago on 13th of September, the world lost one of the Hip Hop greats.
Tupac Amaru Shakur, better known by his stage name 2Pac and later by his alias Makaveli was a rapper, songwriter and actor hailing from Harlem New York. Widely considered as one of the most influential rappers of all time, much of his work has been noted for addressing contemporary social issues that plagued inner cities and is considered a symbol of activism against inequality.
In honour of Pac’s 25th Death Anniversary this week, we can’t think of a better song to pay tribute to this Ghetto Poet than “Changes”.
Recorded in ’92 but released in ’98 after it was remixed by Poke from Trackmasters, the song was an unquestionable smash hit reaching no.1 in Norway, the Netherlands and the top 10 on the singles chart of several other countries. The lyrics tell the trials and tribulation of life in the ghetto and is blunt about the need for change and an end to black-on-black violence. Ironically, the important message of the song only surfaced after Pac became the victim of what his song addresses.
