Released in 1990, “Ice Ice Baby” is a hip hop song by rapper Vanilla Ice and DJ Earthquake. The song was based on the bassline of Under Pressure by British rock bank Queen and singer David Bowie.
Released on his debut album, To the Extreme, this is by far his best known song topping the Billboard Hot 100 in the US and gaining success internationally as well across Australia, Belgium, Netherlands, New Zealand, Ireland and the UK, assisting in the diversity of hip hop by introducing it to a mainstream audience.
The track also appeared in remixed form on Platinum Underground and Vanilla Ice Is Back! A live version also appears on the album Extremely Live while a Nu-Metal version was added on the album Hard to Swallow under the title Too Cold.
Despite the legal troubles that came with this release, (songwriting credits / royalties to the sampled artists), Ice Ice Baby is still a popular classic 90s track evident by its commercial success not only across the airwaves but in the charts as well.
